|Safety first! At Speers we take the health and safety of employees and sub contractors seriously and take pride in a comprehensive, functioning health and safety program. Our commitment to safety has allowed us to become COR certified in 2006, SAFE certified in 2007 and Canqual certified in 2010. The STAR COR program is operated in partnership with the Construction Association of BC while the SAFE certification is in partnership with the BC Forest Safety Council. While our first two certifications are tied to Worksafe BC, our most recent certification by Canqual in 2010, allows us to bid on contracts with companies that have made this a safety certification requirement.
In May 2007, we hired a Health & Safety Coordinator to oversee the program and to ensure it continues to grow and improve. The smooth function of the program to date has enabled us to meet the stringent safety standards within the various industries and pass both internal and external audits with flying colours.
Ongoing training of our employees is a large component of our safety program and Speers continues to provide a variety of in house and external training. Some of the courses and training that we provide are First Aid, Supervisor, S100, Confined Space, Hoisting & Rigging, Transportation Endorsement, Gas Monitoring, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Avalanche Awareness, Due Diligence etc.
Speers Construction also maintains a Joint Occupational Health and Safety committee made up of workers, supervisors and management. They meet once a month to review the program, make suggestions on safety issues that arise on job sites and act as a liaison to bring worker's issues to the table. Workers are encouraged to provide input and can do so directly or through their worker appointed liaison.
With the ever increasing industry focus on safety, we are continuing to be a leader in this field and you can be confident that we will continue to recognize the importance of safety on every job.
